My Nexus One Review

Okey dokey….a full day with the Nexus One under normal usage* and here are my thoughts. *

Normal usage for me is A LOT. 6-10 very lengthy phone calls, running iTweet every hour, push email and answering every hour, wifi on half the day, GPS on for some searches, downloading apps, etc. I run 3 business, so I stay pretty busy if that says anything.

OK so after a full day of using it…here are some of my thoughts:

Pros
- Thinner, lighter, faster, and longer battery life than the iPhone
- Coming from a hardware keyboard, I was scared going to an all touch screen. The predictive text, auto-grammer, and auto-correction are pretty good, and I only goofed a few messages. Overall….B+
- Speed – I can’t slow this phone down! I tried to open every app possible and switch between them and their isn’t any lag at all with this thing. Very impressed.
- Battery Life – My G1 usually died at about 5 PM every day. My Nexus went from 8:30 AM to 10:30 PM before I put it on the charger. Even then it was at 15% so it probably could have lasted another 2 hours. 16 hours on one charge with full 3G, occasional Wifi, and A LOT of lengthy conversations…pretty freaking amazing for sure.
- Tapping the back key gives a slight vibration as intended, but it changes system wide. For instance, tapping an icon amd moving it around, versus “picking” an icon off the list to drag on the desktop….it actually feels like your “picking something off of a tree.” Android 1.5 doesn’t have this, and is exclusive to 2.1 It’s nice to see the OS maturing. Everything is a lot more solid in this build.
- Ambient Light Sensor – Freaking awesome. In bright light the screen gets bright so you can see it, and darker environments the screen get’s darker.
- Proximity Sensor – Photographers are keen to this…most DSLR’s have that motion sensor that blacks out the screen when you get near it. Same thing on the Nexus, but is used during calls. Sweet.
- Noise Cancellation Feature – Duuuuude!! I was on the phone with my Dad yesterday and tested this. I had ToTo playing VERY LOUD on my computer, while on the phone with my Dad. I ask him, “do you hear the music?” He asked if was in my ear. He’s always been smart. Seriously though he couldn’t hear anything. Try it!!
- Live Wallpapers – People are freaking about this feature. Went to the gas station yesterday, up to the counter, pulled out my phone to check an email or a text, and the guy says, “yo is that a Nexus One”…why yes…yes it is. :) He immediately asked me to show him the Live Wallpapers. Cool. What’s even better is that it doesn’t eat your battery at all. Nice addition overall.

Cons
- When I’m on a phone call, I can’t have the volume all the way up. When someone makes an “s” sound or something similar it almost gives a chirp or feedback problem. Very strange, but not on every phone call.
- I do get an occasional lag that I’ve brought up before. However it’s less than a half a second so I’m letting it slide hoping an OTA will fix some memory issues.
- I’m kind of upset that the trackball doesn’t have 3 colors like Google themselves said at CES.

Aside from that….there are no cons that I can think of. :)

Hope this helps some who are on the fence.
